IVF: FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer)

(c) little journey of mine

After making it through PGD with three day 5 embryos, it was time to start a FET cycle, or frozen embryo transfer cycle.  Luckily I got my period right on time and I did my normal day 2 blood work and got a green light.

I started with 1mg of Estrace (estrogen) twice a day from day 2-day 6.  from days 7-10 I increased dosage to 2mg twice a day.  Day 11 I went to 3mg twice a day and went in for blood and ultrasound, since I have a short cycle and they didn’t want things to progress too far.  I was however, good for another few days and returned on day on day 14 for another blood and ultrasound and then started 1cc of progesterone daily.

The shots.  What can I say – they suck.  I did however read a lot of tips and tricks and developed my own protocol of ice cube for 3-5 minutes, shot (while biting down on something since I am a baby) and then heating pad and massaging around a bit.  I can’t lie – somewhere around my 4th shot, on my left side we must have hit a nerve because I have an area where I couldn’t feel much for a week and weeks later it feels like I have frostbite.  Lovely.

By day 16 I started Doxycycline and Methylprednisolone.  On day 19  I went in for my FET – we transferred our best (1) embryo.  I asked for a valium – and whether or not it really did much I did feel more relaxed.  After 4 IUIs (a few not so comfortable) I wanted to be as stress-less as possible.

I did enjoy two things that morning – getting to see the little embryo on screen before they transferred it and getting a print out to take home.  9 days later and feeling not too much of anything, I got a negative on my blood test – so unfortunately it was a failed FET.  Very disappointing but we have 2 left!

IVF: Retrieval + PGD

(c) little journey of mine

Not much to say, I lost track of the daily posting up to retrieval BUT I did stay very true to keeping a low sugar high fiber diet with meals like this.  My shots were pretty standard and on a half way point ultrasound, the way the doctors reported only 3 follicles.  I was sad enough at the news and even more so when they told me that they don’t do retrievals for less than 4 follicles!   I stayed the course and made it up to what they thought was 4 with some smaller follicles growing at a later ultrasound.

By retrieval day I was thrilled when they told me they’d gotten 9 eggs!  This might not sound like much but from where I started, it was like a million.  Retrieval day was a bit strange, it was more like an operation and I was nervous with going under anesthesia.  It went pretty smoothly and other than being tired, I didn’t feel much post retrieval.

Next up:  fertilization.  4 fertilized and on day 5 those were frozen and sent to the lab for PDG.  Under a week later we got the results that 3 had made it through and only 1 tested for genetic abnormalities.  I mentioned I only wanted to know the sex if all were the same, and it was; 4 boys.  3 viable at 3AB, 3AC and 3BC – all day 5. Woohoo!

IVF: Day 6, 7 + 8

(c) little journey of mine

These three days sped by.  450iu Gonal F at night on Thursday where I was a bit tired in the afternoon but not much else to report.  Friday morning monitoring with blood and ultrasound.  The doctor said it was early (is it?) and there was one dominant follicle along with 2-3 smaller ones on each side.   They sent me home (no Ganirelix for me) and called me later to tell me my estrogen was at 183 and to continue with the 450iu nightly for 2 more nights then return the third morning, which is Sunday.

I feel a bit tired, a little twingey in the ovary area (right especially) and emotional.  I took my dog to the vet today and was so anxious I really could have used a few glasses of wine.  None for me though!
